I recycle, use ENJO (enjo.net) products to clean my home with nothing but a cloth and water, I also buy local and eco-friendly products. Local is the key as it means less of a carbon footprint. And I compost all my veg waste to feed my veggie garden.

do the eco detergents work? I have tried a few eco washing up liquids but none of them seem to work?
the eco detergents do work, you must not add them to the water, but rather put directly onto the sponge, clean all the dishes and then fill the basin up to rinse. One that is completely friendly, does foam, definately works is the triple orange wonder gel. The woolies one is okay, but it still contains sodium lauryl sulfate

Why dont we have day light saving (turn the clocks back 1hr in summer ) in South Africa so then we A
because the doesn't shine at 3 o clock in the morning or 9 o clock in the evening like in other parts of the world. If this was the case it would be easier to implement.

I tried the recycle of paper for my scout group and was disappointed that we were not able to get a paper-bell at our grounds. I had to move the heaps onto the pavement when we collected enough for them to pick up. The payout was very low and not worth the mess, wet paper when it rained, dustbin pickers raiding our cardboard and strewing stuff all over the pavement.
I then tried taking it myself to a depot. Much the same payout and the cost of my transport. Also, the depot insisited the paper be sorted by type as they un packed it. This wasted 2 hours of my time for almost no real return. We were collecting paper as a fund raising for the group. I am loath to try plastic, tins or glass as the mess on the pavement would be unbearable.

I would like to know how to be able to save on electricity - the real stuff - except for the kettle
I have a lot of small tea candles dotted around my home and I keep battery powered lamps ready for power cuts. So the only lights I switch on at night is the room we are in.

I had switches fitted to my geysers so I can turn them off once we are finished and only switch them
It really helps drop your electricity bill, I was so happy to see the saving.

Yes they all have thermostates but as geezers are mostly in the ceiing it can be a bit dificult to
the thermostat is at the bottom of the geyser, it is a little dial with an arrow and you just turn it by hand higher or lower

Woolworths have a new range that is good, I used the dishwashing liquid and it really works, I tried them at my daughters house last week and I will start using it in my home.

I've started a compost heap adding all my veggie peeling/egg shells/dead leaves etc. Not going to use store-bought, chemically-treated fertilisers anymore.

We have gotten a recycle bin from a company called Ecomonkey, it's amazing how much recyclable stuff we send off with them, that would usually go into the dumps, they take paper, plastic, glass and tin, and collect our bright yellow Ecomonkey wheelie bin once a week. Very helpful, as opposed to travelling the countryside looking for deposit banks for our recyclables.

Switching off your geyser definitely helps - we cut our electricity bill in half this way! We only have it on from 5pm-9pm now, the rest of the time it's off!
I'm also trying to use more "earth friendly" products eg. Triple Orange washing detergent, Triple Orange Wonder Gel etc...
