I love feeding people. I love an excuse to drink good wine. As a student I once hosted so many people that they had to sit on crates we borrowed from the veggie shop down the road. Dinner parties are only expensive if you want them to be.

Like to be in house with my friend having a nice dinner than at restaurant because you end up not consetrating to people you know but you are always disturbed by lot of noise (TN-Dbn)

I agree that dinner parties are the best. Nothing brings people together like a dinner party.
if you go to places like a restaurant, most of the time its a little to noisy.
Plus if you are hosting it then you can eventually use all those nice table settings you bought from time to time that has just been sitting in the cupboard !!

Yes I do agree, I just love a nice cosy dinner party with simple basic but intimate dinner party. My daughter is studying Professional Cooking at the The Cape Town Hotel School and it's great to receive some basic little tips that makes cooking the meals such a pleasure with a well set table, enjoy...

We run a b&b and wont eat breakfast out because I make a better breakfast at home. If you want a nice night out with your friends check out ladies nights at reastaurants. If you live in KZN Franki Bananz has a fantastic ladies night, I had a chicken wrap with veg and chips and a cocktail for R35.

I think its great to host a dinner party its a great opportunity to dress your table beautifully. It does not have to cost a great deal, if you start a "super Club" where all "members" (friends) take turns in hosting the party and each take turns in supplying the strater or dessert and the hosting member supplies the main meal. It is also a great opportuntiy to socialise with friends on a regular basis.

Bring and share is a great way to hold dinner parties (in this day and age when everything gets more and more expensive - its more the fellowship we're after than the food (although I'm sure we'd never do it without food!)

Sounds like a lot of punters for Woollies :P
I have always preferred to entertain my friends at home. I always cook way too much food (all fresh ingredients and mostly from scratch, because I can ;-)
But I disagree about it being frugal! Entertaining (my way) can be as/or more expensive than just going Dutch at Andiamo's! Unless you have potluck suppers. (btw, I am talking about more than 4 people over for dinner).
I prefer quality to quantity. I save money on pragmatic things. Cheaper is not always better. As for Woollies, unless I have a specific item in mind and a strict list, I avoid it! They are brilliant marketers and are able to part me from my money better than any other store! There is always a tempting item not budgeted for that I have to tare myself away from...

You can't buy clothes from a cheaper shop if you've only ever bought from Jet, Ackermans and PnP Clothing stores, etc. You cannot cut down on bought lunch if you bring your lunch to work with you every day. THE BEST - but please keep it a secret - Cattle Baron Durbanville, Wednesdays to Fridays lunch 12-3: Buffet at R39 pp. The food is delicious and a good variety and they have other specials to be enjoyed e.g. don pedro at a reduced price. This manager knows his stuff and remember to book - it is usually packed. If they can do it, why must other restaurants charge an arm and a leg - and in the end close down because they are too greedy?

I really like the Woolworths special - Dinner for under a R100 as you can have 4 people over, you can all contribute R25 - R30 and you have a wonderful meal together! You also feel special cause it's woolies food after all ;-)

Hi all. Anite, there's a lovely website called "What's for Dinner". I get an email each day of a dinner idea and the ingredients are normally pretty easy to get. In summer we tend to braai a lot but in winter we (there are 4 couples) normally have a big dinner once a month on a rotation basis and the dinner is always held at the person doing the main course. Couple 1 bring starters, hosts main meal, couple 3 dessert and couple 4 either wine or some kind of cocktail. It's fun because we go all out with whatever choose to make.

My sister and family and I and family try and get together once a week and we all have dinner together. We rotate so one week its at her house and the next its at my house. We haven't done it for a while, but it was really great when we did. We should start it up again....how about next week!

I agree with you. Since the beginning of the year, we have made an effort to invite people over for dinner at least once a month and then do a proper 3 course meal with the whole 'tooty" - it has been so much fun and we have also got to know people that we would not have necessarily made an effort with before which has been great

I read an article recently…” A return to frugality, and loving it!” It stated that frugal is the new Buddhism, the new “green", that “recession chic" is the new black and it's hip to be thrifty”…….and it got me thinking……actually it got me into a bit of a heated debate with my hubby as well..….the line between FRUGAL and CHEAP seems too close to tread now, and it now seems easier than ever for us to actually short change ourselves, our families and other people.
I hate cheap!! I like the idea and the wisdom of frugal….but to be honest with you…I don’t find it that easy. I don’t know whether I am alone. The rational part of me knows we need to combat this recession, starting in our own home, that its time to save, economise, cut-back…but I am certainly not buying House brand coffee, nor am I ever wearing so called ‘pre-loved’ swapped clothes!!
So, it looks like I am going to be one of those women dragged screaming into these times…I certainly am not a natural saver…..and I am not loving it. I’m feeling the pain…not the joy!!
