Book-club – why we actually love them

There is nothing better than curling up with a good book. And when that book gets really good, you often feel the need to chat about it with everyone, right.

But if you can’t find anyone else who has read the same book, you’re in a bit of trouble. That’s where book clubs come in. If you’re in a book club, or have been to one, tell us why you loved it.

We meet once a month and we all put in R50. We meet at someone's house or a coffee shop. The member next on rotation buys the books to the value of the money received and then those books go into rotation. As everyone buys different books you get the chance to read something that you would not ordinarily buy. It's also a chance to get together and have a good social. At the end of the rotation, the books that you bought are given back to you for your own personal collection.

How does a book club work? Do you all buy the same book and then discuss it? Or swap books? How do you find people who like the same kind of books as you? And how do you react when a book club member gets you to read something that was truly awful?

Reading is the key to the power of knowledge. Book clubs aren't for me as I have had a bad experience in the past with one, but hey if it works for you, great!!!!

I've started reading Patricia Scanlan and Sheila O Flanagan and really enjoyed it, thanks for the tip.

I have been part of a book club for almost 3 years. Generally I read between 3 to 8 books a month - an expensive hobby! The book club has really helped with this problem, and has also exposed me to books/subjects that I would not normally be inclined to read. I would love to review/reccommend and comment about books in the online club.

I'm totally ignorant. Do the members of the bookclub have to live in the same town or province or do we discuss the books on the internet?? I am a pensioner and have limited finances so lots of travelling isn't possible at this stage.

Esmè  [Orange Grove GT ] 16 Sep 09

I like the idea of an online book club but would also like to start one in the Cape Town northern suburbs. I already convinced two friends to join. Anyone welcome but we are all in the Durbanville area, around 30-years-old, and speak both English and Afrikaans. Contact me at namaste@iburst.co.za

i belong to an awesome book / cook club - one saturday afternoon of the month is reserved for the "girls" - we each take a turn to host and of course menu choice provides some good ideas for everyone else ... oh and don't forget the wine ... and the added bonus are the books

I am a complete bibliophile and have been since early childhood. Love both fiction and non fiction. Live in Florida. Have never been a book club member and have no idea how they work but could be interested.

So? What's everybody reading? I am a bibliophile; high school library monitor, worked in a bookshop

I love murder mysteries, lots of James Patterson, cannot wait to get to my book at night after 8pm, while every one is watching TV. I've read all Patricia Cornwell's books, but of late she seems to get a little odd. I'd love to try some of the Irish and English village living, wrote the authors down.

Esmè  [Orange Grove GT ] 13 Jul 09

Book clubs are fun times. Great chatting about the books but also connecting with other Girlfiends Vivienne (CT)

I go through phases. My current phase is Irish and English village living with a bit of comedy. My current authors are: Kathy Kelly, Marion Keyes, Jill Mansell, Sue Margolis, Sheila O Flanagan, Patricia Scanlan & Kate Thompson. Not brain surgery kind of stuff but easy, light reading and quite amusing. Occasionally I like a bit of crime Ann Rule, Mary Higgins Clark, etc

I can build you a house but i can barely tune my own radio. I am so useless with technology so I really cant help there. Are we allowed to start one on this website? Who to ask? I'll send a few emails. I am totally into escapism - fiction, fiction, fiction and loads of movies.

Funny enough i ahve also been thinking about joining a book club lately... I ahve been passioanet about books all my life and tend to steer more toward the non- fiction types. I live in the West Rand..any ideas???
