Growing our own veggies – harder than you think!

Growing our own veggies – harder than you think!

I`ve started planting herbs in little pots in my kitchen but that is the closest I`ve come to growing my own veggies. Anyone out there in the beginning stages?

I have been doing some research on starting up sustainable gardens. There are some really interesting sites for if you just want to dabble to really getting into the gardening green thing. There is a great little site which I have been following - google Square Foot garden. The idea is that you are able to sustain your veggie needs with just a sqaure foot of your garden. Definately worth a look :)

My hubby and I have started our veggie patch and we are loving it. it is a bit of trial and error but so rewarding. I think I missed the strawberry season but the plant is doing so well.

I find my veggie garden very rewarding, there is nothing like going into your garden and picking fresh spinach, lettuce brocoli etc. I can't wait for my summer veggies to start doing their thing

i have tried to start my own veg garden, but no luck. any tips?

Gordon, please give us some more details on growing them upside down, isn't the weight of the veggies too much? I like this idea and want to try it.

My spinach and sweet potatoes are lookong great. This spring I am going to try carrots and tomatoes. My herbs are doing okay, except the wild parsley which has taken over half my garden.

Melanie  [Rondebosch WC ] 6 Aug 09

I have also started but it does take some time, some are still in pots but some have been transferred to box patches in the back garden. It is great therapy on a saturday morning after a long week....to all of you don't give up keep going!!

i'm thinking of starting vegies in pots for summer just as a little hobby.

Forward some ideas this way, because that's my option at the moment - for now, but am thinking of starting with herbs as I'm always needing that and end up asking my mother-in-law most of the time.

Petro  [Parkdene WC ] 5 Aug 09

I want to start but don't have the time and as we are still going to build more rooms, I have to wait till that's done, but I would love starting planting herbs which can be planted in pots

Petro  [Parkdene WC ] 5 Aug 09

My husband and i started a veg garden with my father in law. ha ha, word of advice, do not plant tomatoes and beans in the same garden unless there is sufficient space. our beans thrived. so much so that they consumed our tomatoes. my father in law had perfect veggies, and he used the method of planting the seeds in seedling pots which really worked nicely

Tanya  [brentwood park port elizabeth EC ] 5 Aug 09

My hubby and I have started a veggie patch, we have 9 different veggies planted and really excited. They all started shooting up but will have to see what the end result will be. Can't wait, nothing like picking your own veg.

Veggie gardening is very rewarding - there's nothing better than home grown veggies! I've recently moved, leaving a thriving garden to the new tenant - her comment was "I'm in heaven, I just walk out the back door to what I want WHEN I want and it costs me nothing"!

Hi Salma. My mum told me to plant them in September when it's much warmer. I brought a plant over from Durban - have it in the pot still and thankfully it is surviving the winter. I will transfer to the soil when the winter subsides. You must plant it with the root and water a little daily.

I have tried many times but every winter they die. curry leaves cannot handle the frost. i know a few people who have them in pots on the patio though. they bring it indoors when it gets cold.

We made our own little hothouse next to our house and have successfully grown tomatoes, rocket, lettuce.
I also grow my herbs in large pots outside and that works well. The secret to the vegetables is to keep them warm and healthy and pests away and watered, with good soil and compost.

Jenny, think there is so much that comes into play, but a good compost is definetly a big factor. Preparation of the soil before planting is importatnt, digging compost in and leaving it for a few weks, then more compost dug in and plant those seeds. The beach sand type soil is not really the ideal, but it can be improved on with compost, bone meal etc....

Martha  [EDgemead WC ] 23 Jun 09

we just bought some things now to plant and we are working on getting the soil right, have bought a book on organic gardening, very informative,
i usd to just throw my rotten veggies into my garden patch and some caught up, have potatoes, onions, and avocado pear, am hoping the ones we plant now will grow well, also starting a herb garden, not sure where is best to plant the herbds though,

Samantha  [Kempton Park GT ] 23 Jun 09

I have a thriving fair-sized veggie and herb garden. I grow thyme, mint, coriander and basil. Also grow spring onions, chillies, baby tomatoes and green bell peppers. I have grown lettuce, spinach and brinjals in the past. I love working in my veggie garden, and I keep it totally organic!

Shakira  [kensington GT ] 22 Jun 09

Love to plant things, but my veggies disappear and I have no idea where to. Thats before they have even sprouted!
Managed a butternut once, but the monkeys took a bite.

I have a quite a good veggie garden. I grow brinjal, cauliflower, lettuce, and cabbages. I have not had great success with tomatoes. I even grow jalepenos, herbs, even leeks too. I find it not too time consuming, as I only spend 15 minutes a day in the garden.

mmmm! Martha, is it really! I have started twice, we live close to the beach...I don't think our soil is good at all. I think I love the idea of green fingers and an earthy, wholsome life..but...it must be the soil hey?!

Jenny  [Llandudno WC ] 11 Jun 09

I had quite a nice veg garden going during summer. But it needs a lot of attention, between snails, aphids worms, neighbours cat using it as a litter box...etc I had quite a time of it. Spinach is one of the easiest to grow, and it just keeps on giving. Zucchini grows well when in the right spot, but watch for those worms. My herbs are all still doing well, especially the rocket. Keep on trying ladies, it is rewarding in the end.:)

Martha  [EDgemead WC ] 4 Jun 09

Started at the begining of this year with potatoes, tomatoes, mint, coriander and chillies. I have not bought tomatoes and mint since. Picked a few potatoes - I think I still have to learn more about it but I have read somewhere that the tyre idea works well - will try again after winter with more veggies. I absolutely love it and can't wait for the cold to die down a bit

Somagandhi (Nalani)  [Moreleta Park GT ] 3 Jun 09

I have planted my own veggies recently. The results is defenately not worth the effort. It is easier and cheaper to buy from the vegatable shops. Worms and snails is a problem.

Durban sun is also quite bad. We've got 40% shadecloth protecting our veg.

My husband and I have built a greenhouse in our garden due to monkeys eating our veggies. We're in the beginning stages but hte one thing that grows really well is gemsquash

Celeste  [Cowies hill KN ] 2 Jun 09

I've planted a veggie garden in an old wheelbarrow - this way I can move it around to catch the sun ... seems to working so far ... if I could just keep those snails off them ... anyone have any tips on this - I've tried tobacco dust so far - seems to work pretty well bit still losing some of them....

pots don't really work for veggies, they seem to die. But my strawberries are growing like a bomb!

I've been trying for a while now - first started a small veggie garden, then herb pots..but they keep dying! First I had loads of snails, then little wormy things...it's driving me nuts!

I also grow herbs, my garden doesn't have enough space for veggies. I would love to be able to start

Try the tire idea - especially potatoes work well - put the first tire on the ground - plant your potato inside it and then start filing l up the tire - when you see the leaves above put next layer of ground etc....you can stack up to 4 tires ontop of each other before you can start harvesting! Enjoy!!
