Difference in prices

Difference in prices

We used to do all our shopping at Pick n Pay but now have started shopping at Woolies because PnP is getting so expensive.

Woolies shopping always used to be a treat for us but now milk, cheese and other perishables are the same price at Woolies and better quality. Skip washing liquid has increased from R45 to almost R90 at Pick n Pay in the past year.

I know we had all those increases in petrol price etc. but does anyone think that the increase in price is justified?

yes i've also noticed that products are smaller and now cost more.....do retailers think us housewives are blind.... why are they doing this?

Christine  [Pietermaritzburg KN ] 15 May 10

At the age of 63 and after 42 years of running a home I have realised I am a complete idiot. At least that is what retailers think! Potatoes used to be 20kg, then 15kg then 10kg now 7kg but the price is now more than for 20kg but we are not expected to know. Dog food was 10kg then 7kg now only 6kg but the price has increased in leaps and bounds in the last couple of months. Toilet rolls are smaller but cost more. Everywhere product sizes are getting smaller while prices rise. Has anyone else noticed?

We live a block from a shoprite and buy most of our groceries there, but when it comes to meat, I rather visit a butcher or Pick 'n Pay as the quality of meat is a lot better, I also had a bad experience with the shoprite house brand frozen cut corn.

Our Shop of Cloice is Checkers for as you say their prices are lower than Pick and Pay
The only complaint I have with Checkers is that they dont offer a more expansive portfolo of products
Pick and Pay is Larger and offers more BUT their prices are extremely expensive by comparrison

Checkers have upped their image and products remarkably! Their prices re also way cheaper than Pn Pay. Love them,

I thought I was the only one noticing the price increases at Pick N Pay. I am now shopping for my grocery at Checkers. Their prices are reasonable!

Is the PickNPay brand as good a quality as some of the branded products.I steer away from their products as they are often more expensive and not always as good. Christine ,Northcliff,JHB

Well I really do not want to get started. I must say my husband is the shop around dad but off course we have to hear about the prices at the various supermarkets, Pick & Pay is really I am sure making 100% profit as I said he shops around and compares, lately we have found Checkers to also give you value for money on certain items but Pick & Pay has sure lost our vote of confidence!

At Pick n' Pay they have been selling Cross n Blackwell Creamynaise for about R6.95, it tastes great and even though its the small bottle, if you buy 2 it costs less than a normal size bottle.I have been buying about 4 bottles every month for 5 months , stocking up just in case they realise the product is too cheap, and double the price.

In Krugersdorp a new shop opened called President Hyper, I find that their meat is very reasonable and they pack it into convenient sizes, as I get very frustrated when I buy meat at the shop and have to use it all or have separate itfor the 2 of us.The meat is also very cheap, I shop for only me and my Fiance' and find it very convenient to buy a pack of Tenderised Steak(about 250kg) for R13.99. Their vegetables are also cheap and their products are sometimes cheaper than every where else. There are only 2 stores in the country , one in Krugersdorp and one in Fochsvill. I have realy saved on my food bill at this shop, most months!

I have been to Pick n' Pay a few times and the price was different to the shelf price when I got to the till, and every time I got the product for free (sometimes as much as R199 for a pack of DVD's) and I got my money back, so DO NOT accept their stories, it is their policy at Pick n' Pay so don't feel bad!!!! Just go to the service desk, and maybe go with them to th shelf to confirm the price is different, then all is sorted and you will walk away smiling!!!

I wish they would better quality control on cheddar cheese. You can pay a fortune for cheese not tasting disgusting. Sometimes I have purchased mature cheddar and paid the extra price for it and it wasnt even mature and tasted like ordinary cheddar cheese

My 2 year old loves the P & Pay brand Noodles (sweet and sour chicken flavour). After waiting from last year December I purchased two boxes. My goodness... I was horrified to find that the noodles (just image) had gone from R1.99 to R3.49 (calulate buying two boxed with 30 noodles in each box).... What a rip off... Oh I almost forgot... they changed their packaging and there is no more sweet and sour chicken flavour

I am sure you all saw the price fixing article in the Sunday newspapers. I want to know what is going to be done - slapped with a heavy fine and consumers still suffer. At places like Pick 'N Pay it is cheaper to but in small quatities than in bulk - toilet paper for example, buying 9 is cheaper than buying 18 per roll? Buying a small box of weetbix is cheaper than buying a bigger box? Please someone explain to me, how on eart does this make sense?

As far as I know when you get to the till and the product price is higher than on the shelf you should be paying the lower price. But every time this has happened to me they give you some or other rubbish story and it seems to be your stupidity.

In the space of 2 months, Mayonnaise went up by R8!! How is this justified??? I was horrified, if it wasn't that I'd promised someone a salad in a hurry, I would most definitely have left it on the shelf and either gone elsewhere to look or gone without!

Liz  [George WC ] 12 Jul 09

We, as customer(s) are being ripped off, no doubt about it! Some products have doubled in price and there is no excuse for it!
We need to know our prices in general as it is the only way to avoid being exploited. Bigger is not always cheaper - take a second to do the maths, often you will be pleasantly surprised.

P&P offer double your money back if you are not happy with their 'No Name Brands' - BUT you have to ask for it otherwise they just give you what you paid!!

Woolworth's fruit and vegetables are often excellent value for money as you can use everything in the packets.

Fruit & Veg City have some great buys. Again check prices on pre-packs and loose products. Potatoes are now being sold in 8 kg bags but prices are up!!

In general there seems to be a lot of 'down sizing' across a range of products even though prices are up!! The customer should be king - don't pay these exorbitant prices (on any products) and force companies to bring them (prices) down!

Pnpay prices have become exhorbatant and I think we consumers are paying for their rebranding of the no name brands ,till slips and logos on the trucks .The increases started around the same time they switched over the branding

Crazy Groceries, 2 Phoenix Centre, Malibongwe Road, Strijdom Park Tel: 0117913140. It's a bit difficult to explain but if you get off the highway at Malibongwe coming from William Nicol you turn left. After the Zenex Garage you take the slipway left to go into that centre (I almost think there is a Delta Motors or Ford showroom). It's on your left. The one shop that glows right in your face, which is right next door to the Crazy Groceries, is an adult shop. Dont forget to check expiry dates or you'll be most disappointed when you get home.

Again, Woollies offers some specials, but how often do you find yourself walking out with things not on your list that look tasty/tempting? It happens to me an awful lot, spending more money than I had planned to, especially when walking the aisles of temptation...even if it is just a healthy packet of organic cranberries. :P

As for PnP, they are cheaper than our local Spar on most items and we get the 25% Vitality incentive benefit on all our healthy stuff ie fruits and veg, beans, pastas, nuts, yoghurt, which is a really nice perk. As for good coffee, I don't drink instant at all and there are often specials on good grounds and beans that suit my habit.

I was so disgusted with Cadbury with their new smaller - but just as expensive - slabs. What gets to me is that the marketing seems to ignore the consumer's intelligence. It is great to see that there are other people out there that feel the way I do. I vote with my money - I stop buying goods from producers that try to exploit me. Same with the stores - I have stopped buying from PnP because even their specials these days are not special.

I believe the price increases on groceries, especially food is not justified. How can you have more

There is a salvage shop in Strydom Park, Randburg where I recently bought Douwe Egberts for R35 for 200g. They have really good prices there - especially cheeses. E.g. Those cheese dippers that you get for the kids lunch boxes - at large retail stores they are over R20. At this shop they are R7. You MUST check expiry dates though. Problem is that you land up spending quite a bit on all the cheapies so you have to be very disciplined.

are totaly riducules, I agree that some things are definitly cheaper at Woolworths, I just wish they would offer more products like Pastas and Knorr cook in Sauces. Don't give Pick n' Pay a total miss, they have this policy that if the price scanned is more expensive than the price on the shelf, then you get the product for free, and you won't believe how many times I have received things for free, so it realy does pay to scrutinise the prices that are scanned through.

I believe the price increases on groceries, especially food is not justified. How can you have more than a 100% increase on any one product. Just look at the price of good coffee. I used to pay +/- R29.99 for a 200g Douwe Egbert coffee. Now, just a few months later it is +R80.00. I cannot afford it anymore so I stopped buying it. I just got back from Europe and bought a 200g coffee (GranArom) for 2euro (app.R22.00) and it tastes great. I just wish I bought more.

Besides the price of everything so expensive, alot of items have shrunk in size. In effect, you are paying more for less. I read the other day jars of peanut butter and bars of soap are smaller than they used to..(I didnt even notice the difference) but way more expensive. They package it so the consumer doesnt even notice. When they add more..its all over the labels in bold writing but lo and behold, they shrink it..and you dont see anywhere on the packaging *NEW SMALLER SIZE* Its disguisting.

The prices has drastically increased not to even mention the Washing powders they have also increased.

Probably it has to do with the cureent economic situation . On the other hand what if it is price fixing.

Is there any change in the quality or quantity. Maybe they have added an ibgredients that is costly hence the price went up.
