An example: I'd like to help you, BUT I have no easy choices right now - becomes - I'd like to help you, AND I have no easy choices right now...see how different that sounds? The word "BUT" invokes an negative reaction. It causes the other party to become defensive. Also important is to remember that it is not always about YOU. Everyone has their own set of values along with what they think is right and wrong. After all..is everyone not entitled to their own opinion? Put yourself in their shoes and see it from a different perspective.

One of the most important pillars of communication when confronted by a situation such as this is to speak the truth without blame or judgment. Pay attention to what has heart and meaning. If using comparisons, rather replace the word "but" with "and"... try it and you are sure to come out as the stronger person
