It was so much better than we expected
Challenging but not too hard, took us about 3 hours in total
Coded Chronicles features new concepts that I have not seen in other escape room board games and some classic ones as well. Each character has a separate book that essentially allows them to interact with the setting at different times - tying in a good mix of the humor from the old shows into their hefty dialog which we had to read out loud, and it honestly did not feel like a chore but actually felt like really enjoyable. We played as two players and followed the instructions; we split the characters between the two of us the best we could and rolled with it. The manual promises that one person wouldn't have to hog a character for long and it's true. My girlfriend and I swapped characters in between investigations, it kept both of us engaged and it also felt like nobody was left out.
This game not only had the traits of a very-well done escape room board game but also played into the murder mystery/who-dun-it type of scenarios that the Scooby-Doo theme is known for. My girlfriend ultimately loves Murder Mystery board games and agrees that this is a well-done mix of the two!
All in all, this game is tough! You get one chance as it is technically a one-time play board game, and there is a lot of deduction and puzzle solving that we as adults even got stuck on so ultimately, I think that the recommended age of 12 and older is correct for this particular game.
Coded Chronicles is an excellent new installment into the escape room board game category with the unique character involvement and clue system. Scooby-Doo: Escape from The Haunted Mansion was unique, challenging, engaging, and just plain fun to play. It just works.
The game is very solvable (but not too easy) by older kids & teens, especially since the book provides hints if you get stuck (and you aren't penalized for the first 2 in each room). Because of the amount of reading and comprehension involved, plus some tricky clue solving, I don't think kids under 8 could solve it without a lot of help. As a family group, we found it just the right amount of tricky/fun, and went through smoothly with only a couple hints needed.
The sad part is, since the game is about solving puzzles and unmasking a culprit at the end, it is really only playable once. Nothing gets used up or ruined when you play though, so it can easily be gifted or passed on to another family! We're planning to pass it along to neighbors! And looking forward to more games by Coded Chronicles!
